Brett Garson became President & CEO of Smith Garson (previously Smith Dawson & Andrews) in 2025, after being an integral part of the company for 18 years. Brett’s understanding of emerging priorities on Capitol Hill and within the executive branch, including the White House, provides valuable insight into clients’ strategic planning. Brett has developed a comprehensive knowledge of federal programs in key areas and continues to establish relationships with senior leaders in those programs, which gives our clients a distinct advantage in prioritizing federal policy and funding targets. His strong network of contacts in both Congress and Federal agencies, along with a wide variety of Washington trade and stakeholder groups, allows him to gain valuable information, ensure clients’ priorities get heard and become elevated, and develop multi-layered advocacy strategies that lead to successful client outcomes.
Brett’s ability to simplify complex impacts of federal laws, regulations, and pending legislation while explaining political challenges and developing straightforward solutions has benefited Smith Garson’s clients. His expertise includes all modes of transportation, energy and environment, the budget and appropriations process, tax legislation, education, the federal grant process, economic development, workforce development, international trade and customs issues, water infrastructure issues, legislative drafting, political intelligence and stakeholder mapping, and the regulatory process. Brett provides regular briefings on federal issues and strategy to clients and is an active participant on panels to share his knowledge on Washington developments.
Brett received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Michigan and graduated cum laude from American University-Washington College of Law. He is a member of the Maryland and D.C. bars.
